PRESENTATION AND OBJECTIVES:

Currently, the reduction of production costs is one of the strategic priorities of any industry, in order to be able to reduce the cost of the final product, guaranteeing quality and therefore increasing its competitiveness in international markets.

In this context, the commitment to resource efficiency is a key element in the short and medium term. Energy consumption represents one of the main costs associated with the manufacturing industry. Optimizing the use of energy resources has a double advantage: on the one hand, it directly reduces production costs and, on the other hand, it boosts the alignment of industry with the Green Deal’s goals of decarbonization and sustainable industry.

In order to address this challenge, SMART PUMPING is proposed as an industrial research project, fully aligned with Industry 4.0 in its strategic area “Massive data processing”, whose objective is to develop a product that allows reducing electricity consumption associated with pumping, in any industry that requires heat / cold in its production process and does so by means of a fluid (food industry; Large distribution of cold or heat; Large renewable energy installations).

The SMART PUMPING proposal consists of the intelligent dosing (Reinforcement Learning) of chemical additives to the working fluid, which are capable of reducing the apparent pressure drop of the circuit and thus the energy cost, which can be reduced by up to 35% for cooling applications. In addition, there will also be less use of the pumping systems, increasing their useful life. This system also aims, based on the data collected and processed by the control system, to propose maintenance intervals adapted to the use and intensity of use actually supported by the equipment, and therefore, to achieve a significant optimization.

SMART PUMPING is a collaborative project between ZINNAE and two of its members: an SME, CARPEMAR, with experience in additive formulation and control algorithms, and a technology center, ITAINNOVA, which will contribute its know-how in the development of intelligent control system software.
