METAWAVE

TITLE OF THE PROJECT:

METAWAVE High-temperature heating processes with breakthrough microwave and digital technologies for increased energy efficiency

GENERAL DATA:

Program: HORIZONTE EUROPE EU
Reference: 101138476
RESOLUTION Date: 07/12/2023
Execution date: 01/01/2024-31/12/2027

PRESENTATION AND OBJECTIVES:

METAWAVE aims to revolutionize industrial high-temperature heating processes using microwave-based heating systems.
The project focuses on improving efficiency, reducing energy consumption, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing productivity. By integrating and validating these systems in real industrial environments in three industrial sectors (ceramics, asphalt and aluminum), METAWAVE aims to demonstrate their superior performance.
The advantages of the proposed systems are higher efficiency, shorter process times and better control, which could contribute to a more sustainable industry. In addition, METAWAVE aims to optimize processes through the use of innovative nanostructured additives, waste-based refractory materials and advanced process monitoring and control systems. METAWAVE also proposes the integration of renewable energy sources to power microwave-based heating systems through a virtual plant, accompanied by an energy management system based on data-driven modeling optimization and together with industrial symbiosis research developing a detailed Hub 4 Circularity (H4C) roadmap.
METAWAVE’s targets include a 420 GWh energy reduction, more than 95ktCO2 avoided and more than 19% productivity gains, with total revenues of more than €230 million and the creation of more than 900 new jobs by 2032. METAWAVE aims to engage diverse stakeholders, promote open science and foster sustainable economic activities, with a special focus on sustainable fuels and raw materials.
The Consortium is made up of 19 partners from 9 different countries, including seven SMEs, six research and technology development organizations, two universities, three large companies and one non-profit organization.
