The IW-NET project aims to implement a multimodal optimization process throughout the EU transport system, increasing the intermodal share of inland waterway transport and supporting the EC’s ambitions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transport by two-thirds by 2050.
This project will review enabling technologies for sustainable infrastructure management. The design of an innovative transportation system to support an efficient and competitive inland shipping sector will be realized, addressing infrastructure bottlenecks, insufficient information technology (IT) integration along the supply chain, and slow adoption of technologies such as new ship types, alternative fuels, automation, IoT, and machine learning.
The technological developments will be evaluated in different Living Labs and also through the creation of digital twins to demonstrate and evaluate the impacts of these technologies on organizational, legal, economic, ecological and security issues.
In this project ITAINNOVA leads the task of creating the simulation models for the creation of the digital twins of multimodal transport.
