PRESENTATION AND OBJECTIVES:

Compliance with current and forthcoming legislation regarding air quality significantly limits the ammonia emissions allowed for pig farms (16% reduction by 2030), which implies the need to implement emission reduction technologies. In this regard, catalogs of best available techniques facilitate the decision-making process; however, the economic impact of deploying emission control technologies requires detailed quantitative analysis. This project will develop a set of digital tools to support decision making in each of the actions necessary to carry out the deployment of emission control technologies, specifically ammonia, in pig farms.
The overall objective of the project is to adopt and exploit digitalization technologies for risk minimization in decision making on the adoption, implementation and operation of technology for the control and minimization of ammonia emissions in pig farms.
The activities to be carried out to achieve the general objective of the project are planned in three phases:
– Phase 1: Virtual sensing. Development of augmented sensors combining information from physical sensor networks with virtual sensors developed from detailed 3D fluid dynamic simulations considering the farm geometry. This will allow detailed assessment of ammonia emissions within the vessels.
– Phase 2: Prototyping in simulated environment. Prototyping and performance evaluation in simulated environment of the best available techniques, their combination and geographical adaptation for the minimization of ammonia emissions.
– Phase 3: Digital twin for operations management. Digitization of operations for optimal control of ammonia emissions at the farm during farm operation.

For Phase 1 of the project, the specific objectives are:
– Objective 1. To quantify the current situation in terms of ammonia emissions inside a pig farm building.
– Objective 2. Conceptualize, define, design and deploy a sensorization system based on the combination of physical and virtual sensors.
– Objective 3. Design software to manage the data and information generated by both physical and virtual sensors.
– Objective 4. Build a virtual sensor, integrate it into the sensing system and validate its functionality.
– Objective 5. Generate and communicate knowledge to the swine sector regarding the use of digital technologies in the evaluation of ammonia emissions.
