The packaging system plays a key role in preventing food waste. The package contains and protects the food against the external environment, it works as a physical barrier that maintains the healthiness, the organoleptic properties, the quality of the packaged food and its shelf life.
Currently, the process of recycling hybrid forms of packaging is complex, since it requires the separation of each of the layers of material they contain, and is not very viable from an economic point of view.
In order to evolve towards a more circular economy, there is a need to develop new flexible packaging with a high degree of recyclability which, in turn, will require changes in the value chain; from product design to new business and market models, from new forms and methods of waste recovery to new models of consumer behavior.
The main objective of the project is focused on the research and development of compatible and circular multilayer structures, functional both with the packaged product and in the packer’s production lines that allow to obtain monomaterial structures or compatible with the current and near future recycling processes. Therefore, the Cir-Flex project is aimed at redesigning the flexible packaging offer in order to systematically avoid and eliminate the volume of waste, conserving resources instead of disposing of them or incinerating them, without forgetting that society demands a reduction in food waste and, therefore, the current functional and performance properties must be maintained without compromising the characteristics necessary for operational packaging.
