The PROBONO project envisions establishing a people-centered construction industry in Europe, working in harmony with stakeholders to deliver scalable, sustainable, viable, energy-positive and carbon-neutral Green Building and Neighbourhood hoods (GBNs).
Green buildings and neighborhoods (GBN) in PROBONO are green buildings integrated at the bounded area or district level with green energy and green mobility management and appropriate infrastructure supported by policies, investments and the commitment and behavior of key stakeholders, which ensures a just transition that maximizes economic and social benefits, considering the specific profile of each district (population size, socioeconomic structure, and geographic and climatic characteristics). GBN infrastructure is a key enabler of inclusive growth, can improve the affordability of housing and services, reduce poverty and inequality, expand access to jobs and education, make communities more resilient to climate change, and promote public education. The objective of the project is to produce validated solutions for the design, construction and operation of zero-emission, energy-positive buildings in sustainable green neighborhoods. PROBONO will provide strong examples of how the technological and social innovations of green buildings and neighborhoods (GBN) can be applied, with a vision centered on building infrastructure and a renewed focus on people and sustainability, making the most of digitalization and smart technologies for the benefit of society. Adoption of the PROBONO approach and innovations will be proposed through a variety of participatory methods that encourage stakeholders (including citizens) to participate in the co-design and co-delivery of sustainable green buildings and neighborhoods.
To achieve this vision and objective, PRO BONO will be implemented in six use cases (Living Labs – LL) on individuals in six EU states. These GBN Living Labs will include two large-scale demonstrators driven by municipalities (Madrid and Dublin) and four living labs representing entrepreneurs/owners promoting the GBN transition (Porto, Brussels, Aarhus, Prague).
The project brings together a multidisciplinary European consortium of 47 partners, construction and consulting entities, utility managers, municipalities, technology solution providers and experts, to convert the six European districts (PROBONO Living Labs) into Green Building Neighborhoods (GBN), with a positive energy balance and zero carbon emissions.
