GaNPUMP

TITLE OF THE PROJECT:

GaNPUMP -Research on gallium nitride (GAN) technologies and high voltage permanent magnet motors for cooling pumps suitable for future generation electric and hydrogen vehicles.

GENERAL DATA:

Program: SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY DGA
Reference: IDMF/2022/0004
RESOLUTION Date: 11/16/2022
Execution date: 01/09/2022-30/09/2024

PRESENTATION AND OBJECTIVES:

The current project is a collaboration between AIRTEX, an automotive parts manufacturing company belonging to the First Brands Group, and the Instituto Tecnológico de Aragón (ITAINNOVA). AIRTEX is known for supplying millions of fuel and water pumps to vehicle manufacturers and aftermarket distributors worldwide.

The project focuses on investigating key technologies related to gallium nitride transistor based inverters and high voltage permanent magnet motors (>300V) to develop 2-3 kW cooling pumps suitable for future electric and hydrogen vehicles expected in 2030. These technologies offer significant advantages, such as higher power density and improved efficiency, which will enable more compact and lighter designs.

The main objective is to build a working prototype pump that will allow AIRTEX to evaluate the scope, feasibility and applicability of these technologies in its pumps. This development not only benefits AIRTEX but also ITAINNOVA, since the technologies developed could be applied to other components and systems in the automotive sector as well as in any other field of mobility and transportation. It also contributes to the promotion of more sustainable mobility, aligning with the European Union’s objectives of promoting integrated and sustainable transport based on electric and hydrogen vehicles.
