Problem

Grupo Sesé has worked with ITAINNOVA to develop an innovative solution, SmartDriving, aimed at truck drivers and traffic managers.

A clear example of the application of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) (1) that are being developed with the digital transformation of companies.

This application works in real time for road freight transport as it facilitates decision making for both drivers and transport managers by processing hundreds of millions of data generated by truck telemetry (tractors and trailers) separated from other relevant information such as commercial agreements and external data.

The objective of this Intelligent Transportation System is to reduce these problems by showing recommendations to drivers and helping the traffic managers of these logistics companies to make decisions.

Reducing fuel consumption is the goal. Grupo Sesé, in collaboration with ITA, has developed an intelligent driving system that facilitates real-time decision making in fleets of more than one hundred vehicles.

By taking advantage of a large amount of telemetry data, in addition to saving costs and reducing emissions, the drivers’ work is made easier.

“Smartdriving is an intelligent driving system” that guides the driver at all times of the speed at which he should drive, as well as the place and time of each of the mandatory breaks he has to make in order to meet the requested transport plan, ensuring delivery on time while reducing fuel consumption and therefore CO2 emissions to the environment.” Jorge Carcas (Transport IT Manager at Grupo Sesé)

Results

After loading a truck, the driver gets into his vehicle and presses the ‘Start Route’ button.

In just a few seconds, the intelligent Smart Driving system calculates the optimal route to the destination, estimates ideal fuel-saving speeds, identifies stops and rest times, and informs the driver of the day and estimated time of arrival at the destination.

From there, the application, by means of a color code (green/red) warns the driver if he has to increase or decrease speed to comply with the plan, informs him of the place and estimated time of the next rest stop, warning of speed cameras when there are less than 5 km to reach them and, of course, navigation indications on which roads he has to use.

If, for some reason, the driver has not been able to execute the current plan (stopped at another rest area or for some reason left the route), everything is recalculated again from the current point. In addition, you also receive information on where and when to refuel.

Smartdriving is an intelligent driving system “that guides the driver at all times of the speed at which he should drive, as well as the place and time of each of the mandatory breaks he has to make and the stations and liters he has to refuel at each moment in order to meet the requested transport plan, ensuring delivery on time while reducing fuel consumption and therefore CO2 emissions to the environment and, finally, improving the productivity of the vehicle”. All this leads to cost savings.

This tool is mainly oriented to help the driver, who is often the great forgotten of transportation companies, where we provide technology to our office staff, but we forget that the driver is alone and is the one who represents our company to customers. Currently there is a lot of driver turnover in the industry, so there is less specialization and tools like these make the day-to-day work much easier.

The main contribution to road transport is the reduction of fuel expenses, saving costs for the company and consequently reducing emissions of polluting gases.
