MODALSHIFT: MULTIMODAL OPTIMISATION LEVERAGING DATA ACQUISITION FROM LOCAL STAKEHOLDERS TOWARDS A HOLISTICIMPROVEMENT OF FREIGHT AND PEOPLE TRANSPORT (Multimodal optimization leveraging data acquisition from local stakeholders for a holistic improvement of freight and people transportation)
Program: HORIZONTE EUROPE
Reference: 101203040
Date of RESOLUTION: 07/05/2025
Execution date: 01/06/2025-30/11/2028
MODALSHIFT aims to improve low-carbon transport systems in European cities. In view of the challenges posed by climate change, the project addresses the need for new ways of traveling-especially for short- and medium-distance journeys-designed to minimize the carbon footprint, in line with recent agreements on CO₂ emissions. At the same time, the project takes into account the need for users to move smoothly, reliably and safely, in order to reduce current problems related to delays, interconnection gaps and transfer inefficiencies.
The MODALSHIFT project will develop a framework for the optimization of transport networks and traffic management. This will involve the use of agent-based modeling, network mapping and comprehensive data collection, including data on infrastructure, logistics and mobility operators.
These data will enable both predictive and prescriptive analyses, scenario simulations based on synchromodality, and the identification of optimal actions to improve the flow of transportation systems. Three test sites – located in Bulgaria, Italy and Spain – will play a central role in validating these approaches.
ITA, as technical coordinator of the MODALSHIFT project, plays a central role in the design, development and integration of the technological solutions. It leads the definition of the system architecture and the Data Space, establishing the interoperability, security and governance standards that allow the connection of public transport, logistics and infrastructure data. ITA also develops the Digital Twins of transport networks, in particular in the case study of Madrid, where multimodal scenarios are simulated to optimize the planning and management of urban transport. In the case of Madrid, ITA leads the integration of passengers and freight in the Estación Sur hub, applying its expertise in data interoperability, digital modeling and intelligent mobility management.
