BIOGEMSE: BIO-INTELLIGENT PRODUCTS MANUFACTURING 4 SUSTAINABLE CITIES
Program: HORIZONTE EUROPE EU – LUMP SUM
Reference: 101178022
RESOLUTION Date: 05/21/2025
Execution date: 06/01/2025 – 11/30/2028
The construction sector accounts for approximately 40 % of global energy demand, 37 % of CO₂ emissions, 50 % of raw material extraction and more than 35 % of waste generated in the European Union. In addition, cement is responsible for about 10 % of global CO₂ emissions, mainly due to the intensive use of fossil fuels in its production. This model is proving increasingly unsustainable in the face of the current climate and social context.
This is why there is an urgent need to transform the construction industry, through sustainable materials, more efficient industrialized processes and a design approach based on functionality, circularity and traceability. This transformation must be aligned with the goals set out in the European Green Deal, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 11, 12 and 13, especially) and the New European Bauhaus.
BIOGEMSE is a European project funded through the Horizon Europe program under the lump sum modality. Its objective is to develop a new generation of modular building products with biointelligent functionalities, manufactured using robotic additive manufacturing technologies and employing biobased materials with the capacity to be recycled, oriented to their reuse in subsequent cycles.
The project is structured around four interdependent technological pillars. The first addresses the processability of new printable bio-based materials, called geopolymers, obtained from industrial wastes and by-products, with active properties such as thermal insulation or environmental decontamination. The second pillar focuses on product design, combining generative design strategies with multi-criteria methodologies to create architectural components inspired by natural structures, optimized both functionally and aesthetically. The third pillar revolves around robotic additive manufacturing, adapting both hardware and software to enable flexible, precise, continuous and traceable production, also incorporating online monitoring and adaptive control systems. Finally, the fourth pillar is based on an interoperable digital infrastructure, based on European standards, where the data generated during design and manufacturing feed digital twins and digital product passports (DPP), ensuring traceability and circularity.
The developments will be validated in a network of 3 Smart Living Labs representative of different climatic zones and building typologies in Europe, in order to ensure their applicability and robustness in real and diverse contexts.
