BAENA: Energy Saving and Non Adhesive Conveyor Belts
Program: Public-Private Collaboration call for proposals. Annual 2023
Reference: CPP2023-010769
Date of RESOLUTION: 09/12/2024
Date of execution: 01/10/2024-30/09/2027
Conveyor belts are vitally important tools in modern industrial installations. These elements, which allow the transport of large quantities of material and products from one point to another, are used for various functions and in most industries, regardless of their main activity.
In the field of heavy conveyor belts, the market demands designs that reduce the enormous energy costs, with the objective of zero emissions. The main sources of energy loss during use are the rotational resistance of the rollers, the bending resistance of the belt and the conveyed material, the slippage of the belt on the rollers and the resistance to crevice rolling.
The main objective of the BAENA project is the development of new conveyor belts based on new rubber compounds that improve energy and transport efficiency during use thanks to the non-stick properties developed to the working rubbers and the reduction of energy loss (minimizing rolling resistance) of the rubber compounds used in the bottom cover. The project is focused on the optimization of the mechanical, viscoelastic and adhesion properties of reinforced rubber for a rational design of high performance elastomeric compounds to be used as overlays in energy efficient conveyor belts.
In order to achieve such an ambitious goal, and thus achieve such a significant technological breakthrough, a balanced scientific-technological consortium with great experience and expertise in each of the areas and subjects involved in the development of the project has been considered.
SPAIN RUBBER, S.L., (SPR) is a chemical company dedicated to the design and manufacture of rubber compounds, whose experience in the development of rubber compounds for industries in various sectors guarantees the ability to make the decisive step from the laboratory scale to the industrial scale, in addition to providing its expertise in the field of compound development.
The Instituto Tecnológico de Aragón (ITA), a Technological Center with a wide experience in the development of high performance multifunctional materials and, additionally, with a great capacity and knowledge in advanced materials characterization.
The Elastomers Group, belonging to the Institute of Polymer Science and Technology of the Spanish National Research Council (ICTP-CSIC), is the only research group in Spain fully specialized in elastomers science and technology.
KAUMAN, S.A., a Galician company dedicated to the design and manufacture of conveyor belts, and as the manufacturer of the final product to which the material to be developed will be applied, complements the rest of the partners in the knowledge, not only of the material base itself, but also in the knowledge of the final requirements of the product, as well as the different fundamental stages in the production process.
This project will stimulate stable cooperation in R&D activities between companies and research organizations, particularly from the point of view of the development of materials in a technological area of the future and with an important economic and commercial projection, which will also represent an important technological and industrial advance for the country.
