TERRAVISION

TITLE OF THE PROJECT:

TERRAVISION: Integrated Earth Observation based platform for novel services to enhance raw materials mining life cycle

GENERAL DATA:

Program: HORIZONTE EUROPE EU
Reference: 101138643
Date of RESOLUTION: 05/12/2023
Date of execution: 01/01/2024-31/12/2027

PRESENTATION AND OBJECTIVES:

Terravision Project+1

Overall objective:
The project seeks to establish and deploy an integrated platform of “Earth Observation-based Mining Services” (EO = Earth Observation) to improve the entire value chain of critical raw materials, promoting more sustainable mining practices.

Partners and scope:

  • It is funded under the Horizon Europe program, with an EU contribution of €6,688,246.24.
  • Fifteen partners from 6-7 EU/EEA countries are involved.
  • The coordinator is ICCS.
  • The Institute of Technology Assessment (ITA) is listed as one of the participating academic/technological organizations.

Innovation pillars:
The project is based on four key pillars:

  1. Data Ecosystem: Integrate data from various sources (satellite, radar, drones, in situ sensors) to cover the full life of raw materials.
  2. Analysis-ready data and spectral library of raw materials: Prepare observational data for analysis, combine it with in situ data, and create an open spectral library to support mining of primary and secondary raw materials.
  3. EO services for the mining industry: Development of services covering phases such as exploration, extraction, volume estimation in open pit mines, risk mapping, etc.
  4. Green responsibility and resilience: Measuring the environmental and socio-economic impact of mining activities in different phases (operation, closure, post-closure), to promote more sustainable and resilient supply chains.

Demonstrations / Pilot sites
The project will conduct validation campaigns at several sites in the EU (e.g. in Greece and Spain) to demonstrate the effectiveness of the Terravision Project+1 platform.

Execution period
Estimated duration: 48 months, from January 2024 to December 2027.
