This 3-year project, funded by the Regions of Knowledge  \ninitiative (FP7-REGIONS-2011-1) of the 7th Framework Programme of the  \nEuropean Commission, has a total budget of around EUR 2.5 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project aims to create an open  \nEuropean platform of excellence in the area of supply chain management  \nand logistics in connection with hubs and gateways that will be open for\n  participation by other regional clusters with a logistics and  \ntransportation profile after its establishment. Its purpose is to enable\n  research-driven regional clusters throughout Europe to collaborate and  \nexchange experiences for increasing sustainability and competitiveness  \nof logistical services and intermodal transport operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The consortium consists of five clusters  \nthat represent essential areas of logistics (deep-sea hubs, airports,  \nland-hubs and short-sea hubs) and its operational objectives are the  \nfollowing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Fostering trans-national cooperation  \nbetween research-driven clusters as well as mutual learning between  \nregional actors. The clusters will work in the areas of interconnecting  \nmajor EU gateways and hubs for sustainable intermodal transport;  \nmitigating local and regional effects of major hub activities and  \ncoordinate involved actors; increasing logistics added value without  \nincreasing transport and traffic volumes; enhancing environmental and  \neconomic efficiency of urban freight transport and logistics.<\/li><li>Developing and implementing joint  \naction plans at the European level to increase regional economic  \ncompetitiveness. These action plans will support and drive the creation  \nof the EU policies within intermodal transportation and co-modality and  \nthe creation of knowledge that will allow Europe to increase its  \neconomic growth without increasing its CO2 emissions.<\/li><li>Supporting the internationalization of  \nthe regional research-driven clusters. SoCool@EU has been set up as a  \npoint starting point and will evolve into an open European platform of  \nexcellence that will contribute to the internationalization of regional  \nclusters and the importance of research.<\/li><li>Mentoring regions with a less developed\n  research profile. The cluster platform will be created by highly  \nregions that will offer mentoring to regions with a less developed regions that will offer mentoring to regions with a less developed regions that will offer mentoring to regions with a less  \ndeveloped research profile, share knowledge and provide access to a  \nnetwork of clusters beyond SoCool@EU to support their capacity building.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In the project the needs of the  \nstakeholders will be analyzed, a strategy for international cooperation  \nwill be elaborated, and adequate plans for joint action will be  \ninitiated and implemented. In addition, training activities will be  \ncarried out.
