However, despite
to the clinical success of organ transplantation, the current demand for organ
far exceeds the supply of donors. According to the World Registry of
Transplants, the approximately 115,000 transplants performed in 2013.
only covered 10% of the world’s needs.

Mortality rates while awaiting transplantation are found to be
in the range of 15-30%, and in some reports in the range of 15-30% in
function of the organ in question.

In this regard, the development of new preservation systems,
evaluation and treatment of organs for transplantation takes on an important role in the
preservation methods based on the use of the traditional method of preservation.
cold storage lacks the necessary capacity to valorize
these organs. Therefore, the introduction of new systems of
preservation will be essential for the development of the
organ transplantation in the coming years.

The main objective of this project is the development of a system of
preservation of organs for transplantation capable of maintaining the organ in
functional conditions during the preservation process. To this end,
The system shall be capable of maintaining the conditions of
and to supply the organ with oxygen and nutrients.
nutrients necessary for its functioning.

The PRENOMON project will be valid for the preservation of kidney and liver and
 focuses on two basic developments:

On the one hand, the device capable of providing the conditions for
preservation, which does not come into contact with the organ.

On the other hand, the components that come into contact with the organ or perfusion medium.

In order to achieve the main objective, it will be necessary to achieve the following secondary objectives:

Development of a system capable of providing the conditions for
temperature, flow rate, pressure, etc., that simulate the physiological state that
 the organ experiences in-vivo.

Development of a software capable of controlling with precision
parameters, as well as the proper management of the
interaction with the user.

Development of on-line sensors capable of providing real-time measurements of the metabolic parameters of the organ.

Development of a disposable perfusion circuit, containing
the elements necessary to direct the perfusion medium into the
organ, as well as the chamber to keep the organ in good condition.
and temperature.

Participating entities

The MODCOMP project has 17 partners from different countries.
European countries: Spain, the United Kingdom, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Belgium and
 Sweden.
